Smith took over or "purchased" the island and displaced the poor families living on it as they didn't fulfill his requirements. He then had illegitimate children with the servants. I wouldn't consider him a philanthropist in any way, shape or form. Far from it.
The above objection is biased, in that 1) it fails to take into account the true nature of Smith's actions on Scilly - a general reform of the leases, which had fallen into chaos thanks to the muddle and indeed corruption of the previous administration. and 2) it is based on a subjective view of information popularly accepted as true but factually without foundation. Please provide references. You will find that they point to a view opposite to the one you seem in your halting way to wish to express [1] Samsonioni ( talk) 16:00, 8 November 2012 (UTC) |
