Numerous newspapers cite that Gilbert was the first licensed physician. Multiple book sources state "probably". Unless the actual licensing record states race, the claim would be impossible to prove. I have opted to state probably, as there could be earlier licensed professionals who have not yet come to light and the conflicting sources do not confirm positively one way or the other.
