If one of the family fought or was a general of distinction in that war with Lord Elgin that might provide an explanation, as would an Arbuthnot in the Colonial service. Possible candidates are the Generals
It was not named after John Bernard Arbuthnot (1875-1950), ADC to Governor General, HK because it is mentioned in documents dated 1874. - Kittybrewster 19:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
The word "Arbuthnot" is not a common English word, for sure, but how do we really know the road is named after a member of the Arbuthnot family? (The article is categorised under "Arbuthnot family") Hong Qi Gong ( Talk - Contribs) 00:47, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
What a stupid argument. Of course the road in Hong Kong is not named after a village, nor would it be named after some poor relation digging peat in Orkney. It is quite obviously, following the British tradition in just about every city they ever built, named after a famous personage of that family/surname. Argument for argument's sake. Do we have a source to say that the road was named after George Arbuthnot? Hong Qi Gong ( Talk - Contribs) 23:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
[2] I work less than a kilometre downhill from this street and I don't think I've ever even set foot on it. The main roads in Central are Queen's, Des Voeux, Connaught, and maybe Hollywood. This is a 300-metre long side street that runs up alongside the old police station. cab 23:34, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
