The basic article was taken from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica. Some of the detail in the online version of the EB appears to have been garbled during scanning. I deleted details of the treaty since they are more appropriate in the Burlingame Treaty entry. Bill 14:49 13 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Anson Burlingame should not be removed from Wikipedia. Important historical character - at least to the present day Burlingames...rumor has it that he is the son of 'Honest Joe Burlingame,' the ?speaker of the House fo Representatives from Rhode Island. Iileenb 12:44, 6 September 2006 (UTC) reply
