An anon changed the name to "Andréas Escobar". I reverted it, however when googling i get more hits on Andrés but also quite many on Andréas. Why? bbx 04:46, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
His proper name is Andrés ('Andrew' in Spanish) 'Andreas' is a variation used principally in Germanic/Nordic languages. VaughnSC ( talk) 22:27, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I have changed the paragraph that said:
The only published reference I could find was this 2001 article from the Guardian which has the quote as "the Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that" and puts the apology 24 hours after the shooting. Presumably this was in the match between Romania and Argentina on 3rd July (listed on Football World Cup 1994). If anyone knows any more or has more references please correct it. -- Andy Smith ( talk) 20:48, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
I changed the first paragraph in the part that states that Andres was killed because of the own goal scored by him. This was never proved and the murder was the result of a fight in a bar where more people were wounded. OM
I agree, the first paragraph is misguiding, I am a Colombian and followed the case in the local media back in the day, his assassination was caused by a drunk armed person, had nothing to do with the own goal or bets. I have heard this story many times, basically from uninformed foreigners that prefer that version, more in line with the preconceptions they had about Colombia. If this is going to be mentioned here, it should at least point to a credible source. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.77.164.54 ( talk) 09:54, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
What does this expression mean?
The article is completely about his death, and nothing said about his football. After all, he was an international footballer and deserves some recognition that he actually played football, such as a factfile of where he played. I will try to find something myself, but it would be nice if someone contributed to his article about his football. Richard n 14:25, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
hai i am kirku from india;
i have a doubt ,did Andery Escobar ever seen a redcard in a world cup match? or in his career? or any bad conduct from his side?.
An interesting fact the article should mention: Columbia would not have qualified for the second round even without his own goal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.54.122.70 ( talk) 18:25, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
I recommend watching a movie/documentary called 'The Two Escobars' ESPN has aired it. Compelling & educational.
pls upload a photo of Andre.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.184.9.19 ( talk) 16:40, 14 December 2011 (UTC)
The result of the move request was: moved to Andrés Escobar. Uncontroversial revert of an inappropriate move. Favonian ( talk) 16:36, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga → Andrés Escobar – The short form is the one used in the overwhelming majority of sources. This would be undoing a very dubious move by newbie editor WikkoBot ( talk · contribs) who wanted to redirect Andrés Escobar to Andrea Escobar. The latter was formerly an article about a Venezuelan pageant contestant of borderline notability which had been redirected to the pageant. WikkoBot overwrote the redirect to write an article about an even less notable Colombian actress. Pichpich ( talk) 13:55, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
The lead is supposed to be a brief description and why the person is notable. The details belong in their own section. The lead should be as follows:
Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga (13 March 1967 – 2 July 1994), commonly known as Andrés Strimaitis Escobar, was a Colombian footballer who played as a defender. He played for Atlético Nacional, BSC Young Boys, and the Colombia national team.[1]
Escobar is best known for having been murdered in the aftermath of the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Enigma msg 18:22, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
In the main article, there were two headings both named "Legacy" with the only distinction that there was another heading in between them. The content was also quite similar, shouldn't the two be merged together? ZigZagZoug ( talk) 02:57, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
Escobar didn't captain the Colombian team at the 94 World Cup. Valderrama did. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diplah ( talk • contribs) 09:45, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
the source for this has since gone defunct. unless we can produce an archive and prove that it is reliable, i think this page should be restructured, because this is a central component to the claim that his murder was WC-motivated 216.164.249.213 ( talk) 17:35, 22 December 2022 (UTC)
