Opened by the Maidens and Dunure Light Railway, which was operated by the Glasgow and South Western Railway, the station passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway during the Grouping of 1923.
This company closed the line in 1930. The northern section of the line was reopened a year before nationalisation in 1948 put it in the Scottish Region of British Railways. These trains did not use Alloway station, passing directly from Ayr to the holiday camp.
The station does not seem to have reopened with the postwar DMU shuttle to the holiday camp. Neither RVJ Butt nor Jowett show it and the Jowett I have is the nationalisation version. This awaits further work. Britmax ( talk) 14:05, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
