A news item involving Alan Parker was featured on Wikipedia's Main Page in the In the news section on 31 July 2020. |
Before moving into film, he was captivated for being one of London’s best known copywriter and commercials directors. He started off his career as a director at an advertisement agency called Coller Dickinson Pearce (CDP), where he directed his own scripts for television commercials in their basement. After his short lived partnership with David Puttnam for a photography agency, he decided to extend his horizons towards the white screen. He directed his first movie “....” as a full time director in 19bla.. He displayed intellectual ability in other areas which include producing, acting, and writing, but chose to rise in his career as a film director.
Soon after beginning directing motion pictures some of which were a great success and attracted the interests of many, his gift for directing was fully recognized in his hit movie “Midnight Express”, for which he earned the Best Director and Best Picture Oscar awards in 1978. Using the screenplay adopted by Oliver Stone, Parker was successful in drawing the attention to this biographical film and gained the liking of many film critics. Midnight Express is based on the true story of Bill Hayes, an American who is subjected to imprisonment by the Turkish police for trying to smuggle drugs into the US from Turkey, and is forced to escape from torture and inhumanly behaviour.
Confusingly, there is another Alan Parker CBE not listed in the disambiguation pages (as of September 2010) - longtime Chief Executive of Whitbread plc, a major hospitality corporation based in the UK. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.159.31.29 ( talk) 11:32, 5 September 2010 (UTC)
I moved the image of Parker in '78 to the right, because with left alignment, it broke quote indentation, or indeed any indentation. Bug report filed. Because there are so few images in the article, I don't think right alignment unbalances the layout. -- Lexein ( talk) 12:41, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

This article says he died on 31 July 2020 following a lengthy illness. If any one knows what this illness was, it would make an interesting contribution to the article. Vorbee ( talk) 17:28, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
These three articles say that he retired from film in 2015.

Are any of these reliable? However, a lot of articles are saying that his last film was in 2003 though. MikaelaArsenault ( talk) 19:46, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
