I thought proteins that connected epithelial cells to the "basal membrane" were called hemidesmodomes? 128.211.227.159 ( talk) 05:54, 4 December 2011 (UTC) reply

Don't know if anyone still cares about the above question but a desmosome is a macula adherentes junction between two epithelial cells. It is made of desmoglein proteins, which are a member of the cadherin family, and binds to intermediate filaments, specifically cytoskeletal keratin. When the epithelial cell is binding to connective tissue the junction is called a hemidesmosome.

Although I have tagged it under WikiProject Cell Signaling, I have some confusion. Seeking insights. Diptanshu Talk 03:53, 12 May 2013 (UTC) reply
