Despite the implications of the frontspiece by Aubrey Beardsley, the actual book is NOT pornographic, even by Victorian standards -- it is written in a style that reminds me of Tom Robbins. It's definitely a comedy, NOT an "erotic novel" or anything like that. The scenes of the flogging are not really meant to be very sexual, but rather are supposed to be religious in nature (though the characters in the book acknowledge it's a problem that some people experience such feelings from the whippings.) The bulk of the story is about the quirky characters being encountered and hilarious situations experienced.
