General: is it worth a footnote explaining why Cov are playing in Brum? You mentioned the stadium move and as that's quite a rarity (for most of us) perhaps it needs a bit of background.
This match was actually before the move to Brum, which was at the end of the 18-19 season. The fact refers to the attendance at the Ricoh Arena (which was mentioned in the previous sentence), since Cov moved there in 2005. I have added the year to clarify that point. —

I'm really not a fan of that table format, it's confusing enough for me and I understand the format. Also is it
MOS:ACCESS compliant? Embedding one table inside another is grim...
I've just switched it to "Coventry" rather than complicate things, as it only seems to be used once. I've changed the next sentence to "City", which hopefully is clear enough even for those not familiar with the nickname? —

"Marvin Sordell scored .." unless ambiguous, no need to normally repeat first names.
"due to the unusual format of the competition, the winner scoring two points in the group table and the loser just one" this feels like an odd place to start describing the competition format. Probably better to discuss this when talking about the trophy format in general. And "just one" point for the loser seems a strange way to put it when they normally get zero points.
I'm happy with it all. But one thing is nagging, and it's "It was played between Coventry City and Oxford United, both of League One, and decided the winner of the 2016–17 EFL Trophy, a knockout tournament for the 48 teams in League One and League Two and 16 Category One Academy sides representing teams from the Premier League and EFL Championship. " which is somewhat of a Beowulf-style sentence. If we split this nicely, I think we're done.
