Text and/or other creative content from this version of Kuwae was copied or moved into 1452/1453 mystery eruption on 1 March 2022. The former page's history now serves to provide attribution for that content in the latter page, and it must not be deleted as long as the latter page exists.

The articles 1452/1453 mystery eruption and 1458 mystery eruption seem to have an overlapping scope - this study claims that in Antarctica there is evidence for two separate eruptions, but it's not clear which of them the other sources/content refers to. The current consensus in the ice core community is that there are two mystery eruptions: a northern hemispheric one in 1452 and a southern hemispheric one in 1458. The consensus in PAGES-VICS is that if Kuwae has anything to do with the mystery eruptions, then it is probably the southern hemispheric one in 1458. However, Kuwae continues to be associated with the 1452 eruption (an old hypothesis from 1994) in some papers because some authors from other fields have yet to catch up on developments in ice core chronologies over the last few years.
