Is this a reference to
Augustus Berkeley Paget? He would presumably have been in Denmark in 1869, not the United States. Can anyone elucidate?

Without the source in front of me, I couldn't say, but it does appear to be him. However, it's not clear he was in the U.S., nor in Denmark, when the gift was made (tho more likely in U.S., given Custer's career). Did Paget visit the U.S. between postings?
