Lead Acid Currently attempts are being made to develop alternatives to the lead-acid battery (particularly for automotive use) because of concerns about the environmental consequences of improper disposal of old batteries and of lead smelting operations. Newer technologies are unlikely to displace lead-acid batteries owing to the much greater cost of potential alternatives. Nickel-metal hydride batteries are already widely used in hybrid vehicle traction packs, more practically but at greater expense than Lead-acid. Lead-acid battery recycling is one of the most successful recycling programs in the world. In the United States 97% of all battery lead was recycled between 1997 and 2001.[5] An effective pollution control system is a necessity to prevent lead emission. Continuous improvement in battery recycling plants and furnace designs is required to keep pace with emission standards for lead smelters.

Lithium Ion While elements of the Li-ion batteries are recyclable it can be difficult to find how provides this service. Unless you know of a recycler in your local who handles Li-ion batteries we recommend disposal by:

-    Returning the battery/battery pack to the manufacturer or supplier
-    Sending the battery to your local council or shire through their offices or waste
           transfer stations.

Some organisations consider these batteries as non-hazardous waste but the common belief that all batteries are an environmental and health hazard through groundwater contamination of acids make careful disposal preferable.
