→Special considerations: Not dependent in any way on presence of US state abbreviations. MOS:ACRO's default is to not use dots, to the dotless form is always permissible. (It should actually be the default recommendation here, with "D.C." permissible as second choice, not the other way around). Same as with US/U.S., basically. Certain individuals like the excrescent dots, and we need to fight with them, but they cannot mandate that all editors must use dots in either term.
