It is a shrub or small tree native to tropical Africa, ranging from Guinea to Côte d'Ivoire in West Africa, from Nigeria to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in west-central Africa, and to Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique in eastern Africa.
