Lieutenant General Chaudhary Sarfraz Ali HI(M) TBt & Bar [a] [6] ( Urdu: چوہدری سرفراز علی; 1 December 1968 – 1 August 2022) was a three star Pakistani general who was serving as Corps Commander Quetta since December 2020 and Commander of the Azad Kashmir Regiment since December 2021 until his death in a helicopter crash on 1 August 2022. [7] [8] [9]
He embodied traits of kindness, humility, and open-mindedness. He gained recognition amongst the people of Balochistan for his understanding of their issues and dedicated focus on their advancement, including women's education, supporting the youth and fostering skill development. Particularly notable was his initiative to establish two women cadet colleges in Quetta. He humbly requested the local media and authorities not to attribute or mention his involvement in the uplifting of Balochistan. [10]
Sarfraz was born in Sargodha, Punjab, West Pakistan in Arain family on 1 December 1968 to his father Chaudhary Dewan Ali Arain, who served in the Pakistan Air Force as a Squadron leader at PAF Base Mushaf and as instructor at PAF College Sargodha. [11] [12] He has four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. During the time of his death, it was reported that his mother was alive, but the current status of her is unknown. [13]
Sarfraz is survived by his widow Arifa Sarfraz, two sons and daughter. [14] His son Ahmed Ali is also in the Pakistan Army and at the time of his passing was a Captain and his Aide-de-camp. [15]
Just 10 days before the crash, Sarfraz planned his daughter Zainab's wedding ceremony and walked her down the aisle. [16]
At the age of 20, he was commissioned into the Pakistan Army in the 6 Azad Kashmir Regiment after completing the 79th Pakistan Military Academy course in March 1989. [17]
He was known for leading from the front and as a result received his first Tamgha-e-Basalat in 2005. He received the second in 2008 for his gallantry in the war against terrorism. [18]
He had an illustrious military career, including commanding Pakistani units during the Operation Rah-e-Rast and Operation Zarb-e-Azb.
From 2012 to 2014, he commanded the 111th Infantry Brigade. He later served as Pakistan's defence attaché to Washington, D.C. from 2014 to 2018. [19]
In January 2018, he was appointed as Commandant of Pakistan Command and Staff College. On 25 October 2018, he was appointed DG Military Intelligence.
He was appointed Commander of the XII Corps in December 2020, where he served until his death in August 2022. [20]
Chairman AM League, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad, stated on an interview that Imran Khan wanted to appoint Sarfraz, not Faiz Hameed, as COAS after Qamar Javed Bajwas retirement. [21]
In October 2021, he was among 3 generals interviewed by PM Imran Khan for the post of Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence, the premier intelligence agency of the country. [22] [23]
On 12 January 2012 when Sarfraz was appointed Commander of the 111th Infantry Brigade, the Pakistani Government, Pakistani media and Indian media speculated that a Coup d'état was about to take place due to Sarfraz's posting at a time when PM Gillani had accused COAS Kayani and DG ISI Pasha of violating the constitution by submitting "illegal" replies against Zardari to the Supreme Court on the memogate scandal which was sent to the White House where Zardari had begged America to save him from the Pakistan Army. [24] The rumors started by the government and media later turned out to be false as there was no Coup d'état and was a routine change of command. [25]
While commanding the brigade, he led the recovery efforts for the Bhoja Air Flight 213 which crashed in Rawalpindi on 20 April 2012. [26]
In addition, he led a team of officers to clear crowds of protestors belonging to the PAT and PTI who were a part of the 2014 Azadi March outside the Pakistan Television Corporation headquarters protesting against the Nawaz Sharif government. [27]
He served as Pakistans Defence attaché to Washington from 2014 to 2018.
In July 2016, he was invited to give a speech at the Naval Postgraduate School in California to the students of the schools National Security Affairs, South Asia curriculum. He informed them about the Pakistan Armys campaign against extremism, terrorism, and securing the AFG-PAK border. [28]
Sarfraz was also known for being a cook as he would prepare breakfast for fellows/unit officers who arrived from Pakistan and were posted at the embassy. [29]
Jan Achakzai a friend of Sarfraz, recalls that Sarfraz avoided publicity and never took credit for the work he did for Balochistan. In addition he states, that Sarfraz was an avid reader and Achakzai would be excited when the general would review his columns while giving positive feedback. [30]
Moreover he shares that Sarfraz was humble, open-minded, and easily accessible to civilian leaders. [31]
Sarfraz focused on women's education and their skill development. He also renovated several schools in the area, notably establishing two women cadet colleges in Quetta, and requested the local authorities and media to not credit or mention him for this work. [32]
He helped notorious Baloch folk singers Akhtar Chanal Zahri and Jangi Khan get free treatment in Combined Military Hospitals, Quetta. [33]
Qamar adds that whenever a Pakistani soldiers funeral was brought, Sarfraz would lead the funeral prayer and his eyes would be filled with tears upon kissing the coffin of the soldier. [34] [35]
According to his subordinates, he was very kind towards them and always led from the front. He was known for being tough on soldiers who were slacking in their work. [36]
On 1 August 2022, a Pakistan Army Aviation Corps Eurocopter AS350 Écureuil carrying six officers, including Sarfraz, DG Pakistan Coast Guards Brigadier (approved Maj Gen) Amjad Hanif, Brigadier Muhammad Khalid, Major Saeed Ahmed (pilot), Major Muhammad Talha Manan (co-pilot) and Naik Mudassir Fayyaz (helicopter crew) went missing during flood relief operations in Balochistan, Pakistan. [37] On 2 August 2022, the wreckage of the helicopter was found with no survivors. [38] [39]

The statement added that Gen Qamar formally installed Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali, Commander Quetta Corps as Colonel Commandant of AK Regiment.
He always shied away from publicity and media coverage, never taking credit for the things he did in Balochistan. He was an avid reader himself and would encourage good write-ups. As a columnist, I would always feel excited when he would value my pieces: "Thanks for very thoughtful views, very helpful and very impressive... On the dot", he would admire. It was such a privilege to work with him on narrative-building and social engagement in Balochistan.
Lieutenant General Chaudhry Sarfaraz Ali Shaheed was from Sialkot. He was born in Sargodha, the city of Shaheen. His father was Squadron Leader Chaudhry Dewan Ali.
Apart from him, he has two brothers and two sisters. His mother is alive.
The son is Capt Ahmed who was serving as ADC with him.
The wedding ceremony of his daughter was organized 10 days before his shahadat.
Sarfaraz Ali, who has also been the commandant at the Command & Staff College in Quetta, had been commissioned in Six Azad Kashmir Regiment in March 1989 and served the Pakistan Army for 33 years.
Leading from the front was his instinctive trait evident from the gallantry award Tamgha-i-Basalat (TBt & Bar) bestowed upon him for his daring actions during the war against terrorism in 2005 and 2010.
General Sarfraz, the commander, southern command, was one of the contenders interviewed by former prime minister Imran Khan for the post of director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in October last year.
According to experts in defence matters, the procedure for appointment of the ISI director general is neither mentioned in the Constitution nor the Army Act, and all previous appointments were made as per traditions under which the army chief proposes three names to the prime minister who then makes the final decision.
The scandal revolves around a memo allegedly sent from Pakistan's political leadership via Mr Haqqani to Adm Mike Mullen seeking US help to tame the Pakistani military.
Brigadier Sarfraz Ali, who is heading recovery efforts.
Since 2014, I saw Brigadier Sarfraz with his men at the entrance of PTV clearing out the protesting crowd. If we talked about him with some mutual friends, everyone would have praised his good manners and hard work.
Students of NPS' National Security Affairs, South Asia curriculum and others listen to Pakistan Defence and Army Attaché Brig. Chaudhary Sarfraz Ali of the embassy of Pakistan, describe Pakistan Army's campaign against militancy and extremism and its challenges of battling homegrown terrorism as well as securing its porous border with Afghanistan.
One fellow said that during his deployment as a defense attache in Washington, he would prepare breakfast with his own hands for fellow fellows or unit officers coming from Pakistan.
He was humble, open-minded and very much available whenever he interacted with civilian leaders. Once I asked him how his meeting with the Governor (i.e, Zahoor Ahmed Agha) went. He said, "Like always, any particular thing? I can answer".
To his credit, he established two women cadet colleges. "Two years ago no one had faith when we started the induction. The second best thing is in the offing Haha!" "....."You shall be amazed to know that 100% of them are from Balochistan," said Gen Sarfaraz proudly. He requested not to bring his name for these achievements. He said: "Request not to bring my name or appointment".
Lieutenant General Sarfraz also held the artists of Balochistan in high regards and was always there to support them. For example, he generously helped the ailing legendary folk singer, Akhtar Chanal whereas Jangi Khan was extended free medical treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Quetta.
And whenever a martyr's funeral was brought, he would lead the funeral prayer. His eyes would be filled with tears while kissing the coffin of the martyr.
He would personally lead funeral prayers of the martyrs, presenting them his tears and signaling a solemn oath to carry on their mission.
According to his subordinates, he was very kind towards them and always led from the front to galvanise them for action. They also add that General Sarfaraz was very tough on those who were "dodgers" in their working patterns.
ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan on Friday visited the residence of martyred Balochistan Corps Commander Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali and condoled with the family over his martyrdom in a helicopter crash at Lasbela. Imran Khan during the visit condoled with Captain Ahmed, the son of Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali, and other members of the family. The PTI chairman also prayed for departed soul and his higher ranks in Jannah.
"His Highness (President Al Nahyan) expressed deepest condolences over the tragic loss of precious lives due to the helicopter crash in Lasbela," a statement from the military's media wing said on Friday.
"Chief of General Staff KSA expressed deepest condolences over tragic loss of precious lives due to helicopter crash in Lasbela," ISPR said.
He said that besides his sterling professionalism, sagacity and vision as a general, he was an extremely humane and kind-hearted person who always helped the needy. He was equally popular in Washington also, he added. US Defence and State Departments have also expressed their condolence over the loss, the ambassador continued.
LAHORE- Unseeded Muhammad Salar Khan won the Lt Gen Sarfraz Ali Shaheed Junior Tennis Tournament. First Salar upset second seed Inam Qadir in semifinal in straight sets and then he beat top seed Zaryab Khan in straight sets to win the final 6-3, 6-2. Arishba Maqbool beat Areeba Anwaar in ladies singles final 6-4, 7-5. Col Asif Zaman (R), former DG PSB, was chief guest and gave away prizes to the winners and appreciated efforts of PLTA Chairman Iftikhar Ahmad Rao and Secretary Rashid Malik. Tournament Director Inam-ul Haq thanked the chief guest for full support for Shouhada's tournaments. He also thanked the PLTA for supporting him in hosting these events.
Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan (North) organized the All Balochistan General Sarfraz (Shaheed) Football Tournament at Loralai with the aim to promote sports culture in Balochistan.
In a tweet, the military's media wing said those promoted included Maj Gen Akhtar Nawaz, Maj Gen Sardar Hassan Azhar Hayat, Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, Maj Gen Salman Fayyaz Ghani, Maj Gen Sarfraz Ali.
The brigadiers promoted are Nauman Zakria, Kanwar Adnan Ahmed Khan, Syed Aamir Raza, Tariq Zameer, Tahir Gulzar Malik, Shahid Mahmood, Mohammad Asghar, Khalid Saeed, Ayman Bilal Safdar, Sarfraz Mohammad, Rafiqur Rehman, Inam Haider Malik, Salman Fayyaz Ghani, Sarfraz Ali.
