Sara is an uninhabited peninsula situated in the southeastern part of the Caspian Sea within Azerbaijan. The Sara Peninsula formed as a result of merged islands due to declining sea levels. Spanning is 27 kilometers.
Sara features smooth sea-facing coastlines contrasting with rugged bay-facing edges, marked by a 2.5-meter ancient coastal ridge. Its interior comprises six ecological zones, hosting varied vegetation, from extensive meadows to groves.
Despite appearing barren, the bay-facing coast thrives with lush vegetation, providing habitats for over 90 bird species and wildlife like wild boars, reed cats, jackals, and foxes.
With historical significance, Sara served as a naval base during Peter the Great's campaigns and housed the Caspian Flotilla headquarters. Until 1840, it functioned as a Russian fleet anchorage before relocating to Baku Bay. [1]
Due to the fact that the sea level continues to decrease, the area of the Sara Peninsula is rapidly expanding. [2]
