The content in this portal seems to have stopped being updated in 2007, for the most part. i just updated some of it (my first effort at editing a portal). if anyone else wants to contribute, thats great. we are definitely not ready to bring back "voting" for any of the content, if its only 1 or 2 people editing here. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 01:22, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
Well, not really, but i did replace some content. I did create categories for EACH editable page that the portal links to, found at Category:San Francisco Bay Area portal. This makes it easier to navigate. Ive added some guidelines to how to add articles. I think that quarterly rotation where appropriate is about right. at least as long as i am the only editor. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 09:11, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Dates for last major changes:
Do you know, Sept 28, 2012: change in january. possibilities from more recent articles: (this is hard to collect, i will try to use the new article tool at the project page): checked oct 5 to nov 1, found these: A Thousand Lives: The Untold Story of Jonestown, Carneros Creek (Napa River), Cordilleras Creek, Arizmendi Bakery, Downtown Oakland Historic District, Forts Baker, Barry, and Cronkhite, List of Crystal Dynamics video games (may be FA soon)
Cities panel 2: oct 1, 2012. change entirely in january, or just add some CDP's as list is nearly complete. not sure yet. (see below)
quote: sept 28, 2012. change in january. possibilities: [[]], [[]], [[]]
selected article: sept 30, 2012. change in january. possibilities: White Night riots, Phoenix (fireboat), Leo Ryan
selected picture: sept 28, 2012. change in january. possibilities: File:San Francisco in ruin edit2.jpg, File:Mission Santa Clara.jpg, File:Devastation in San Bruno.jpg
topics column 2: oct 1, 2o12. change in january. this can rotate entirely, but thats a lot of work. possibilities: [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]], [[]]
so see y'all in january some time. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 07:45, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Bold items were added this cycle, so others may still be used in April 2013.
for consideration in about 3 months (april 2013)
We should just cycle through Category:FM-Class San Francisco Bay Area articles first. thats a few years. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 05:49, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
if we consider the files of similar types (3 of the bridge, 4 of the earthquake) as "1 for each general type" (ie use each one 1/3 or 1/4 as often), we then have 11 images to rotate through, with 5 not used yet: not enough. so, we need to collect a list of other images to add eventually to cycle through. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 01:43, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
Added selected biography. 99.101.139.189 ( talk) 20:23, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
New articles, from late march through june 2013. I may add 2, 3, or 4 DYK's if we have enough. 5 bold articles were added july 2013.
Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 01:54, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
The Wikiquote link leads to the collection of SF quotes: there is no SFBA page. Here are some other pages which have SFBA related quotes:
Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 06:20, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
I replaced the quote, new articles, selected image, selected bio. another contributor replaced the selected article, right on my schedule, which is nice but not necessary, as i dont own the format here. thanks for the good work, and please, anyone can add their own timeline for changing articles to this portal, add randomization, choose their own articles if they are at least close in spirit to other portal guidelines. I am no expert, i just dont want this to be a moribund portal. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 08:38, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Use 2-4 of the new articles above, add new biography, new quote, new select article, new image. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 03:08, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 22:12, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
New articles started since the last batch above:
I dont think im going to upgrade every 3 months. maybe every 4. its february now, ill try for end of month, maybe. last set was placed in late october, so we have nov, dec, jan so far, if i wait till feb its 4 months. i may start now, as i started late before.

Selected article: Eastern span replacement of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge
selected biography:
Selected image: thumb|Albino Alligator 2008
Selected quote:
A city on hills has it over flat-land places. . . . This gold and white acropolis rising wave on wave against the blue of the Pacific sky was a stunning thing, a painted thing, like a picture of a mediaeval Italian city which can never have existed. John Steinbeck, in Travels With Charley (1962)
To be considered for my planned update mid june (4 months from the previous update)
If i dont switch to random images prior to then, heres a good one to add:
I figured out the random function. all archives are now a list of the full set of selections. no more updating any section EXCEPT DYK. I do NOT want to rotate through DYKs, as long as i can find 1-4 new articles every few months to feature here. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 03:49, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
we ahve about 4 fm panoramas, and more at the commons, to add a new section. Ive added the new panel, and highlighted have been added to the archive:
Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 05:33, 23 June 2014 (UTC)
I may do dyk's whenever i have at least 2. I have shortened the taglines to fit convention. I dont want to rotate dyk's, that seems weird, to see old selections of new articles. I have instead added an "previous DYK" section, and given each batch, by month, their own page. the current dyk's will be given the next page in that series, and the main page will have new dyk's, either when we get 3, or if its been 3 months, whichever comes first. i found the DYK's used at the cali portal that are sfba related, added them to the list Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 03:52, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
DYK's and other items to add or consider. as always, highlighted means they were added:

I have revamped this moribund portal extensively. I think its ready for featured portal status, but i do want to get feedback first, as i am currently the ONLY editor working on it. i plan to update the DYK on a regular basis, and am maintaining the associated wikiproject, the Wikipedia:WikiProject California/San Francisco Bay Area task force mostly on my own, checking for new articles. Collection is unfortunately inevitably biased towards San Francisco. i tried to find other photos, but there are so many great SF shots, i couldnt help add them. I went through the entire commons category tree, skipping only a few sections, such as the endless historic building images, many of which are ordinary. please add more of the other regions if you find them. they dont have to be perfect, just show a unique feature of the area. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 16:38, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
for either august (actually, the august slate was moved to july) or october (now can be a monthly feature, so august it is):
Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 06:06, 9 July 2014 (UTC)
Bay area by year. I will add years chronologically in reverse order. i am back to 1984 now. I am sure i can find at least one item for each year going back to 1848. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 03:32, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
another new feature: bay area events (ie periodic events). added the biggest or most interesting. articles are uniformly horrible, but the events are a highly notable aspect of the region. Mercurywoodrose ( talk) 07:26, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

weird. i may have different inclusion criteria, but if not, there seems to be fewer newsworthy events in the Bay Area since May. i didnt include the various free speech stuff, cause they seemed like nothing burgers. nothing actually happened here of any import. you can add them if you like, but it will sound a little...pathetic. WikiProject Portals is back!
The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.
As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.
There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.
Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.
And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.
From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 07:44, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

This portal is not rendering properly, because it has too many expensive Lua function calls. This is not a software bug but requires that we simplify the portal. Please can someone who knows the topic suggest which parts could be trimmed down without significant loss? Thanks, Certes ( talk) 16:41, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
