American Civil War portal "Did you know?" talk page

This page is devoted to discussing content on the "Did you know?" portal subpage. Generally speaking the question posed will point portal users toward significant new articles in this and related content areas. I'll ask users to help us maintain a relatively stable version of the question for the period, asking users to make their changes on the article, not this pointer toward that article. All that being said, if the question is poorly posed or misleading, please discuss here first in order to keep the portal page face somewhat stable. BusterD 23:04, 25 September 2006 (UTC) reply

General Robert E. Lee was graduated #2 of his West Point Class. Who graduated # 1? s```` —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.200.165.129 ( talk) 20:30, 12 June 2009 (UTC) reply

Nominate a new article

We'd like to highlight significant new (created in previous twelve weeks) content in this section, and while ACW task force will help sort wheat from chaff, we encourage article creators to submit their new work toward this page.

Already used

  1. Ulysses S. Grant not new (starter article)
  2. Nathan Bedford Forrest not new (starter article)

List nominations below this line:

  1. The class standings of # 1 & #2 of General Robert E. Lee`s West Point Class.

Grant at Belmont

If you read Battle of Belmont, you will see that Belmont was out of range of the Confederate guns at Columbus. Grant withdrew his force after the arrival of Gideon J. Pillow with reinforcements. Hal Jespersen 16:17, 29 August 2006 (UTC) reply

Evidently "marching the mile to Belmont" put Grant within range. According to this inturpretation, (Grant) "was forced to withdraw in some haste after overrunning the Confederate camp when the guns from Columbus opened fire on his troops" • CQ 21:29, 29 August 2006 (UTC) reply

My apologies. I checked some other sources and that interpretation is correct (although it makes it seem as if the artillery was the sole reason for Grant's withdrawal). I will need to rewrite the article, which is barely more than an NPS stub currently. Hal Jespersen 23:16, 29 August 2006 (UTC) I have updated the article.
