The
Red Flag or
flag of the Soviet Union is a
symbol used to represent
communism and
communist political parties. It features a
sickle superimposed on a
hammer. The two tools are symbols of the
peasantry and the industrial
proletariat respectively; placing them together symbolises the unity between agricultural and industrial workers. The flag was adopted by the
USSR in December of
1922 at the First Congress of Soviets of the
USSR where it was agreed that 'the red banner was transformed from the symbol of the Party to the symbol of a state, and around that flag gathered the peoples of the soviet republics to unite into one state - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics'.
