Piotr Marek Napierała ( [napjɛˈrawa], born May 18, 1982, in Poznań [1]) – Polish historian specializing in the history of the 18th century, doctor of humanities, lecturer in the field of national security at The University of Commerce and Services (WSHIU) in Poznań. [2] Publicist, [3] author, YouTuber. [4] Long-time member of the board and vice-president of the Polish Association of Rationalists. [5]

Biography

Scientific activities

Napierała graduated from the Faculty of History at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. [6] In 2009, he received a grant from the Minister of Science and Higher Education. [7] In 2010, he obtained a Ph.D. in history at the Faculty of History at the Adam Mickiewicz University, based on the work "The Country of Freedom" and "The Country of Slavery" – the British and French Vision of Freedom – the 17th-18th Centuries, under the supervision of Waldemar Łazuga. [6]

In the years 2013–2020, he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of the Adam Mickiewicz University. [8] In the years 2012–2015, he worked as an assistant professor at the Higher School of Trade and Services. [7] In 2016, he was an assistant professor at the University of Security in Poznań. [6] [7] Since 2017, he has been teaching national security [2] at The University of Commerce and Services. [7]

Napierała also completed postgraduate studies in pedagogical preparation at the Faculty of Finance and Banking at the WSB University in Poznań. [7]

He was a member of the main board of the Polish Association of Rationalists in 2014–2015. Until 2020, he was the editor of the portal Racjonalista.pl. [1] [9]

Habilitation procedure

In 2021, the Scientific Council of the disciplines: political and administrative sciences, social communication and media studies, and security studies of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań refused to award him the degree of habilitated doctor in the field of social science in the discipline of political and administrative sciences. In the habilitation process, he received three positive assessments of his achievements and one negative one. According to the committee, the discussed book Frederick II the Great as a Liberal Ruler "does not fit into the discipline of political and administrative sciences", although "it may fill a certain cognitive gap". [10]

YouTube

Napierała runs a mainly historical channel on YouTube. Initially satirical, theatrical, with time presenting serious historical discussions, commentaries and book reviews. [11]

Criticism and polemics

In 2017, Tomasz Flasiński, in his review of Napierała's book China and Japan and the West – a History of Misunderstandings, accused Napierała of making false statements and contradictions, as well as of relying on journalistic, propaganda and unreliable works. [12]

In 2020, Rafał Chwedoruk, in his review of Napierała's book Frederick II the Great as a Liberal Lord, accused the author of not taking root in the achievements of contemporary science or in the sources of the era. [13] The accusations concerned ignoring archival resources, the deficit of memoir and memoir-like materials, the lack of articles from scientific journals, the lack of order and reflection on the state of research, the lack of use and discussion of the achievements of German historiography, the absence of Russian-language literature.

In 2023, as part of a polemic with the views of Adam Wielomski, Napierała accused him of practicing clerical and pro-Russian propaganda, as well as anti-Western, anti-liberal, and especially anti-Protestant propaganda. He described Wielomski as "one of the main brakes on Poland's intellectual progress." [14]

Private life

He is the grandson of the philosopher Edmund Harwas, and the son of psychologist Barbara Harwas-Napierała. [15]
