Opisthocheiridae is a family of millipedes belonging to the order Chordeumatida. [1] These millipedes range from 5 mm to 16 mm in length and are found from Belgium to Morocco. [2] Adult millipedes in this family have 26 or 30 segments (counting the collum as the first segment and the telson as the last). [3] [2] This family includes the cave-dwelling species Opisthocheiron canayerensis, notable as one of only a few chordeumatidan species with only 26 segments in adults, four fewer segments than typically found in adults in this order. [4] [3] The adult female of this species has only 42 pairs of legs, and the adult male has only 40 pairs of walking legs, excluding two pairs of gonopods. [4] [3]
