Old North Maluku derby ( Indonesian: Derbi Lama Maluku Utara), also known as the Ternate–Tidore rivalry, is a football rivalry between two teams from North Maluku. [1] Bringing together the best teams from North Maluku, Persiter based in Ternate and Persikota based in Tidore, which is at least one of the local teams that can match the superiority of Persiter there. [2]
Flavored by a long history of rivalry between the two teams' home regions, this has even spread to the realm of football. When Persiter even rose to the highest division of the Indonesian league, local team supporters in North Maluku united to support Persiter who represented their region. [3] But on the other hand, this of course invites jealousy from supporters of other teams, for example Persikota Tidore. [2] These two regions have a historical tendency to be very competitive, even since the time of the Ternate and Tidore sultanates. [4] The rivalry continued to heat up even when the sectarian conflict in Maluku Islands occurred, when it was a political period, where even at that time Persikota Tidore had not yet been officially formed. Where the Sultan of Ternate's camp and the Islamist camps of Tidore and Makian attacked each other. This extends to aspects of their lives, even to football match. [5] However, nowadays these two things are rarely brought up, riots usually only occur when there is small friction between the two team supporters, for example during the deciding match for the North Maluku Zone of Nusantara League at Gelora Kie Raha Stadium in Ternate on 2016.
