Schmitz was born in Fargo, North Dakota. He moved to Bismarck at the age of 10. He earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting and a Master of Business Administration from University of Mary. [1] [2]

Schmitz currently works as a certified public accountant in Bismarck. [1] He ran for mayor of Bismarck against incumbent Steve Bakken. [3] [4] The election was held on June 14, 2022.
