Machimpur, also spelt Masimpur is a village under Ward 23 of Sylhet, Bangladesh. According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, the population of the village was 6,829. [1] The village was noted in the 20th century for Manipuri dance after it was visited by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. [2][ full citation needed] [3]
Gurudev had his first glimpse of Manipuri in 1919, when he saw a performance of Ras given by some girls at a place called Machimpur in Sylhet district.
In 1920, Tagore had gone to Sylhet ... and visited a village named Machimpur, where he saw some Manipuri boys dancing.
