Mark Jacob Lenderman (born 1999), also known as Jake Lenderman, [1] [2] is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Asheville, North Carolina. He has released three albums, and also plays with the alternative rock band Wednesday. He also has played drums for Indigo De Souza. His album Boat Songs was listed by several publications as one of the best of 2022. Lenderman's style has been described as alt-country, classic rock and indie rock music. He has listed Neil Young, Jason Molina and Drive-By Truckers as influences.
In 2018, Lenderman played the drums for fellow Asheville artist Indigo De Souza on her albums I Love My Mom and Any Shape You Take. [3] Lenderman met Karly Hartzman, lead singer for the group Wednesday, and he would join the band for an EP called How Do You Let Love Into the Heart That Isn't Split Wide Open. [1] In 2019, he released a self-titled album, his first as MJ Lenderman. [4]
Wednesday released I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone in 2020, and Lenderman toured with the group in February of that year, until the COVID-19 pandemic cut it short. At the time, Lenderman continued to work in an ice-cream shop to support himself. [3]
Lenderman released a second solo album, Ghost of Your Guitar Solo, in 2021. His third album Boat Songs was released in 2022 with Dear Life Records. [5] Several publications listed it as one of the best albums of 2022. [6] [7] [8]
After the success of the album, Lenderman signed with the record label Anti-. [9] In 2023, he released the singles "Rudolph" and "Knockin'" to promote the release of his upcoming album. [3]
In early 2024, Lenderman contributed guitar and vocals to the album Tiger's Blood by the band Waxahatchee and was listed as featured guest artist on the album's lead single, "Right Back To It". Lenderman appeared with Waxahatchee for their performance of "Right Back To It" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. In June, he announced his new album, Manning Fireworks, with the first single "She's Leaving You". [10]
Lenderman studied at UNC Asheville for three semesters. [3]
Lenderman is dating his bandmate and musical collaborator Karly Hartzman. They both perform guitar and vocals for the band Wednesday. [1]
