The football team from
Hațeg was founded in 1956, with its current name, Retezatul, and the club's colors were white and red. Over time, the club had several names such as Victoria, Unirea and Abatorul (the 60s), Gloria and Autotransport (the 70s), Avântul (1977–1987), Haber Hațeg (1991–1992), and from 1996 returned to Retezatul.[6]

Established in 1907, the club spent most of its history in the
second and in the
third leagues of Romania. Their best performance was winning
1960–61 Cupa României against
Rapid București, with that performance the club entered in history of
Romanian football as the only club which succeeded to win the
Romanian Cup without ever playing in the
top league.
