Las Yescas is an unincorporated community in Cameron County, Texas, United States. [1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 221 in 2000. It is located within the Rio Grande Valley and the Brownsville-Harlingen metropolitan area.

History

A post office was established at Las Yescas in either 1915 or 1916. The community had a cemetery, several farms, and some scattered houses in 1948. Two hundred thirty-seven people lived in the settlement in 1976. It did not have a water system until the East Rio Hondo Water District sent water to the community in 1986. Its 17 acres (6.9 ha) of land comprised 40 houses and 180 residents that year. Las Yescas was most likely named for the Yescas Ranch. The word yescas means " tinder" in Spanish. Its population was 221 in 2000. [2]

Geography

Las Yescas is located near the intersection of Farm to Market Road 803 and Farm to Market Road 106, 5 miles (8.0 km) east of Rio Hondo in northeastern Cameron County. [2]

Education

Las Yescas had its own school in 1948. [2] Today, the community is served by the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District. Children in the community attend Las Yescas Elementary School, Liberty Memorial Middle School, and Los Fresnos High School.
