Sir Joel Nathan Bennathan (born 15 July 1961), styled Mr Justice Bennathan, is a British High Court judge. [2] [3] [4]
Attending Queen Mary College, Bennathan was the first lawyer in his family. He would later be called to the Bar in 1985 by Middle Temple. [5] He was appointed King's Counsel in 2006. Before becoming a Judge, Bennathan worked in Doughty Street Chambers. [4] He worked as a defence barrister, specialising in criminal law and up until his appointment undertook a number of high profile cases. [6] [7]
He was appointed as a Recorder in 2009 to the South Eastern Circuit. [5] [8]
Bennathan is a guest lecturer at London South Bank University for their Law Degree Course. [9]
In January 2019 Bennathan was shortlisted for the 'Crime Silk of The Year' award. [8]
In December 2021, Queen Elizabeth II approved his appointment as Justice of the High Court. He assumed his position on 11 January 2022 [10] and was assigned to the King's Bench Division. [11] He received his customary Knighthood in July 2023, at Windsor Castle. [12]
