Half of Generation Z, one of the most populous generations, is LGBTQ+. PRRI discovered that up to 28% of Gen Z said they belonged to the LGBT community, significantly more than the 16% of Millennials (those born from 1980 to 1996) and 7% of previous generations. Among Generation Z adults between the ages of 18 and 25, 72% identified as heterosexual, 15% as bisexual, 5% as gay or lesbian, and 8% as "other". [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
An increase in those identifying as LGBT has been seen since the 2000's, with the 12 - 20 age group being the most crowded. While there has been an increase of LGBT individuals in many states, California has become the most LGBT state in America. [ citation needed]
Opinions on LGBT
In Trump's administration, President Donald Trump has no clear opinion on the LGBT community, but Vice President Mike Pence has a long record of anti-LGBT lawmaking and rhetoric. Transgender people specifically, including those in Gen Z, have been a target of the Trump administration. [6]
According to the annual Accelerating Acceptance report, from 2017 to 2018 the number of Americans aged 18 to 34 who were comfortable interacting with LGBT people fell from 53% to 45%. This is down from 63% in 2016. [7]
Gen Z has also expressed certain concerns about the LGBT community and its survival. [8]
Polling and discover A poll in 2021 showed that nearly 1 in 6 Gen Z respondents (or 15.9%) said they are queer or transgender. A smaller yet still significant number of millennials also identified as LGBT. 1 in 10 people born between 1981 and 1997 (or 9.1%) said they are queer or trans, with a high percentage (8.1%) declining to answer. Comparing with 2020, when 3.5% of Americans said they were LGBT. That rise represents a 60% increase in identification in less than a decade. [9] [10] [11]
The amount of Gen Z who identify as LGBT has increased from 10.5% in 2017 to 20.8% in 2021. [12]

Analysis by the European Fundamental Rights Agency (EFRA) on the rights of LGBT people, a third of young LGBT people today say they have been physically or sexually assaulted; one in 10 young LGBT people say they have experienced housing difficulties or homelessness, and the figure is even higher for trans people, at 17%.11% of young LGBT people aged 18 to 24 say they are ‘very open’ about being LGBT. These figures concern the whole of the European Union. [17]
Laurentiu, a 23 years old from a small village in the north of Romania, told RTBF that he became aware of his homosexuality at the age of 6. A singer of traditional Romanian music, did not support him afterwards. At the age of 11, he was sent back to an orphanage where he was mistreated before deciding to flee to France. He now lives in Brussels. [17] A 2019 poll researched how many people believed that "that there is nothing wrong in a sexual relationship between two persons of the same sex". Especially in Gen Z, there are many discrimination, swatting, doxxing in the United States, with LGBT victims mostly being killed by the police.
