Frederick Isaac van Mierlo, [1] known as Freddie van Mierlo, is a British Liberal Democrat politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Henley and Thame since 2024. [2]
Van Mierlo grew up in Preston, Lancashire. He has a BSc in geographical science from the University of Bristol and an MA in European Union Studies from Leiden University in the Netherlands. He has also studied geographical sciences at Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France. [3] [4]
Van Mierlo has worked for Harwood Levitt consulting since 2014, specialising in working with new medicines and in supporting the company's growth and business development. [5] He lived and worked in Belgium for some years before moving to South Oxfordshire in 2020. [3]
He was previously, since 2021, a member of the Oxfordshire County Council for the Chalgrove & Watlington division, representing the Liberal Democrat Green Alliance (as Liberal Democrat). [3] He was also a South Oxfordshire District Council member for the Watlington ward, since 2023. [6]
Van Mierlo was elected as Member of Parliament for Henley and Thame in the 2024 general election. He won 45.0% of the vote, with a majority of 6,267 over the second-placed Conservative; there were a total of seven candidates. [7] Although this was a new constituency, its predecessor, Henley, had been held by the Conservatives for 114 years, since the 1910 general election. [8]
Van Mierlo lives in Henley with his wife and daughter. [9]
