Summary

Description
English: Bread is one of the basic ingredients of every meal in Serbia, and it can even be said that it has a kind of ritual nature. As a traditional welcome greeting, bread and salt are brought out in front of guests. It is believed that this custom of serving guests with bread and salt was established during the time of Karadjordje, the Serbian leader who led an uprising to liberate Serbs from centuries of Turkish slavery in 1804, but it is more likely that his tradition goes back even further. Fresh bread and a bowl of salt are brought in front of the guest and the guest takes a piece of bread, dips it in salt, and eats it that way. This custom is applied today on special and festive occasions, as a way to show the guest that the host is looking forward to it.
