At the time of the great schism in American Presbyterianism over slavery and other issues, some members of the church, in reaction to the "New School" preaching of Dr. Samuel Hanson Cox, split to start an "Old School" church, located at Remsen and Clinton Streets. while others left help start the Church of the Pilgrims, and others joined the Plymouth Church, which in 1846 bought the First Presbyterian site when the First Church, needing to expand, moved to Henry Street. Many of the stained glass windows in the new church were by the Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios. (Source: "History" from the church website)
