Fanna_AKK_Pisonia_Forest.jpg(340 × 500 pixels, file size: 81 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Summary

Description
English: A trail winding through a forest of Pisonia grandis on Fanna Island, Southwest Islands of Palau. Original field note: Pisonia grandis occupies most of the interior of this small, uninhabited island, rich in trees & seabirds. This forest type has largely disappeared from most Pacific islands, because Black Noddies & other seabirds prefer to nest in its branches, then their guano drops to the ground below, enhancing its fertility. Thus the first places on islands to be cleared are usually a spot near the landing and then further inside the atoll where the richest soil and most underground water can be found.
