English: In New Delhi on September 18, 2014, the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and the Chinese President, Xi Jinping witnessing the signing of an
memorandum of understanding between their foreign ministers
Sushma Swaraj and
Wang Yi. This memorandum opens an alternative Hindu pilgrimage (
yatra) route, named "
Kailash-
Mansarovaryatra". While both
Mount Kailash (
冈仁波齐峰) and
Lake Mansarovar (
玛旁雍錯) are situated in Tibet Autonomous Region of the PRC, the only route as of 2014 goes via the
Lipulekh Pass (
里普列克山口). A new route that goes through
Nathu La (
乃堆拉山口) was opened in 2015 as a result of this memorandum.
