1882년에 은으로 만든 최초의 근대적 화폐이다. 앞면에는 ″대동일전(大東一錢)″, ″대동이전(大東二錢)″, ″대동삼전(大東三錢)″이라고 적혀 있으며, 뒷면에는 작은 원 안에 호조에서 만들었음을 나타내는 ″호(戶)″자가 새겨져 있다. 대동일전 두 개와 대동이전 한 개가 있다. 이 은전은 청(淸)나라에서 구입한 마제은(馬蹄銀: 중국에서 거액의 거래를 할 때 화폐처럼 사용하던 말굽모양의 은괴) 3만 냥을 원료로 하여 호조에서 만들어 1882년 11월에 유통되었다. 그러나 대동은전의 발행 근거를 나타내는 기록이 보이지 않아 소재 가치나 명목 가치를 정확하게 알 수 없으며 그것이 화폐 본위의 성격을 띤 것인지의 여부도 알 수 없다. 더구나 대동은전은 대부분 해외로 유출되거나 재산 축적용으로 퇴장하여 거의 유통되지 못하였다. 원료인 마제은의 가격 급등으로 대동은전의 제조 원가가 높아져 적은 양만 주조되는 데 그쳤으며, 발행한 지 9개월이 지난 1883년(고종 20) 6월에는 주조가 중단되었다.
