Summary

Description
English: Interpretive sign: "The Bahay Kubo, or Nipa Hut represents a Filipino range house. The Filipino farmer lives and rests within such a dwelling near his rice fields during preparation, planting and harvesting seasons. The Bahay Kubo offers a welcome refuge from the hot sun and frequent thunderstorms. In the Philippines, the Bahay Kubo is made of bamboo, with sturdy oak trees as posts, and nipa leaves as roofing. A creek runs nearby, bringing water for domestic and irrigation uses, and supporting fish as a food source. Ornamental plants surround the house and fruit trees grow on the hillside." Location: Filipino Exhibit, Heritage Gardens, Kepaniwai Park, Iao Valley, Maui, Hawaii
