Alexander Graham Bell in 1881 for his father,
Alexander Melville Bell. The rear carriage house was used as a laboratory by the younger Bell until the
Volta Bureau was built across the street. After the elder Bell died, the house was used as a library and laboratory space. The building is listed on the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites and is a contributing property to the Georgetown Historic District.
