DescriptionViscous fingers in a TiO2 sol-gel thin film formed from a Saffman-Taylor instability. 200x magnification reflected light.tif
English: A thin film of TiO2 sol-gel, deposited by spin coating, and air have been confined between two flat plates called a Hele-Shaw cell. The interface between the two fluids (the sol-gel and the air) is unstable known as a Saffman-Taylor instability. The sol-gel forms patterns called viscous fingers which are the result of the air (the less viscous fluid) displacing the sol-gel. The colours are the result of a thin film interference effect where light interacts with a very thin layer of material.
