Il re Umberto I (1844-1900), Conte di Monza, aveva un legame particolare con la città e con la Villa Reale, dove risedette a lungo fino al giorno dell'attentato in cui trovò la morte. Fu proprio grazie alla sua generosa elargizione di 500.000 lire, effettuata nell'agosto 1893, che si poté avviare la costruzione del nuovo nosocomio cittadino (avente sede in via Solferino e attualmente conosciuto come "Ospedale Vecchio").
