Description |
This photograph depicts the dedication ceremonies of Portsmouth Air Force Base, when it formally opened on June 30, 1956. The base was renamed Pease Air Force Base on September 7, 1957 in honor of World War II Medal of Honor recipient and New Hampshire native, Captain Harl Pease, Jr. of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Pease Air Force Base closed as a result of the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure Commission action. A portion of the former air base is currently operated by the New Hampshire Air National Guard as Pease Air National Guard Base, while the remainder of the former base has been re-developed as Pease International Tradeport. Brigadier General Robert J. Fleming, Jr. served as Division Engineer of the New England Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the construction of the base.
