The Rx class locomotives were the most powerful broad-gauge locomotives on the SAR until a series of large locomotives essentially of US Railroad Administration design were introduced by Commissioner
W.A. Webb in 1926. The
Pacific-type 600 class locomotives were large-wheeled to haul passenger trains at express speeds, including The Overland, from
Tailem Bend to the
Victorian border.
