Southern Ocean sea ice around
Antarctica both covers a larger area than the boreal counterpart and more of it melts during local summer.
Blue line is the northern hemisphere sea ice area.
Sea ice around the
North Pole melts off surrounding shallow continental shelf areas in the summer, but a larger area of the
Arctic Ocean remains ice covered than in the southern hemisphere area.
