Ceanothus spinosus—greenbark ceanothus. C. spinosus is a tall shrub or short tree that grows on slopes near the coast from San Luis Obispo County southwards to northern Baja California. It is also known as red-heart from the red color of the heartwood of the root crown. It starts blooming in January and will continue to bloom until late spring. It often has a second bloom in autumn.
