amazing flower on this NZ native. the Tawari, has only one species in NZ, restricted to NZ as well. it grows as a tree up to 10m + high, in lowland and lower mountain forests (the Mamaku plateau is up to 2000'amsl). the leaves grow as a whorl pattern, seen here but as they age they may appear in opposition or alternates (see flowerpic). the flower is stunning, late spring to mid summer with the seed capsules forming thereafter through to early autumn. the capsules hold five black seeds in a red fleshy foot. Bay of Plenty NZ.
