Hamburg-Altstadt wurde 1897/98 nach Plänen von
Hanssen &
Meerwein sowie
Martin Haller für die Reederei
Ferdinand Laeisz erbaut. Der Pudel auf einem der Giebel spielt auf den Spitznamen von Laeisz' Ehefrau und die mit "P" beginnenden Namen der Schiffe (sog. Flying P-Liners) an.
