English: Picture of the former site of
Oakland Public School located at Dawson Street near Holmes Place in the
South Oakland neighborhood of
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 20, 2010. The school no longer exists, it was torn down several years ago, and where it once stood is now the Holmes Place
Condominiums. On Dawson street, between a couple of condos, there is a sign (pictured) that says, "1893". This may indicate the year in which the former Oakland Public School was built. A woman on the street told me the sign is situated where the front of the building used to be located, and she also said, "
Andy Warhol and
Dan Marino used to go to school here." According to the information I found online, the building's architect was
Ulysses J. Lincoln Peoples, and the architectural style was
Romanesque Revival.
