The National Committee for a Free Germany (German: Nationalkomitee Freies Deutschland, NKFD) was an anti-Nazi organization founded on July 12, 1943, in the Soviet Union, consisting of German POWs and exiled communists. Led by Erich Weinert, its purpose was to depose Nazi leadership, initiate peace negotiations, and restore Germany's 1937 borders. The NKFD, along with its affiliated League of German Officers (BDO), focused on propaganda efforts to encourage German soldiers to surrender. After World War II, NKFD members played significant roles in the establishment of the German Democratic Republic.
