Summary

Description This is the Cartonnage coffin of king Shoshenq II which featured a falcon's head similar to that of this king’s silver coffin. The Cartonnage Coffin was decayed and consisted almost entirely of the gold foil, with a very little left of the underlying cloth and plaster. The capably reconstructed cartonnage bears decoration resembling that of the silver coffin lid, with a few variations, the most striking difference being the presence of decoration on the back, in contrast to the undecorated trough of the silver coffin. This object was on display at the “Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs” exhibition (August 20, 2022 – February 12, 2023) at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, California.
