Independent of other movements regarding the term safe space, Dr. Anthony Fry initially referred to the term safe space in a doctor-patient relationship. He introduced this idea in the United Kingdom in the inaugural conference of the British Holistic Medical Association in 1983. [1] He later expanded on this idea of safe space in a clinical setting, broadening the term to describe an environment in which human beings could flourish. This was published as the book "Safe Space" by J.M. Dent in 1987. [2] In this book, Dr. Fry writes about the interpersonal, emotional, human environment and the necessary material, home-centred environment, both interdependent and interrelated.

Dr. Fry is a fully qualified medical doctor, who worked as a practising Consultant Psychiatrist at Guy’s Hospital in London for 15 years.

History

At that time, Dr. Fry was the founding editor of the British Holistic Medical journal and vice chairman of The British Holistic Medical Association. [3] This was supported by the Prince of Wales, who is now the King, and Dr. Fry and other key members of the new association met informally with the Prince - who was lively, warm, well informed with a great sense of humour.

The Prince of Wales wished to open the conference, but last minute withdrew due to affairs of State. During this conference, Dr. Fry presented his paper, entitled “Safe Space.” An interpersonal space where trust, acceptance and a degree of intimacy prevailed. The paper focused particularly on the relationship between doctor and patient. Within the confines of the consulting room, the doctor offered the patient a safe space to speak their innermost thoughts and allow their body a private, personal space to be accessed by the doctor. Later, Sir James Watt, President of the Royal Society of Medicine, set up a colloquium at the Prince’s request, to which Dr. Fry was invited to join and attended.

Attending the conference was a senior member of the publishing house Dent, and after his paper Dr. Fry was approached by Dent to write a book on the subject. As a busy dad and NHS consultant, Dr. Fry was reluctant - but thankfully passion triumphed over reason.

The book was published in 1987, with emphasis on both our need to feel safe emotionally, in intimate relations, in communities, and safe materially; in particular, in our homes, workplaces, towns and cities. It was published on Amazon Kindle in 2018. [4]

New Edition

Dr. Fry is writing a new edition of Safe Space, given the ever-greater interest in the interpersonal environment, safety to be who you are, to trust, to get close. The world is burning up, overpopulated, and humans are moving to the cities, falling victim to ever-changing viruses like COVID-19 and more than ever, bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics - key items that were central to the book in its first publication.

Dr. Anthony Fry’s new edition of Safe Space will be published in early 2024.
